
James A. Frantz, aka “Submarine Jim”, age 90, passed away on March 29, 2025, in Clearwater, Florida. Born on February 6, 1935, in Ohio, James lived a life marked by dedication to service, and a passion for the open road.
Jim proudly served in the United States Navy for 22 years, achieving the rank of Lieutenant. His long and honorable military career reflected a deep commitment to his country and a steadfast sense of duty. The discipline and leadership Jim demonstrated during his time in uniform left a lasting impression on those who served alongside him.
Beyond his military service, Jim found joy and freedom in riding motorcycles. A hobby that brought him both adventure and peace throughout the years. His love for baseball led him to spend many years serving as an umpire for youth leagues in Pennsylvania. He carried that passion through his later years enjoying attending MLB spring training games and minor league games in Florida.
James shared 61 years of marriage with Grace Frantz. A loving family that includes their daughter Lori Kaminski and her husband Ron, their son Jim Frantz and his wife Nicky. He had six grandchildren: Alan Royer, Braden Royer and his wife Kasey, Chase Royer and his wife Bria, Josh Frantz, Kyle Frantz and granddaughter Olivia Kaminski. James is also remembered by his sister Phyllis Kite and her husband Bud, his nieces Marianne Moore and her husband Perry and Linda Serim and her husband Feyzi.
An interment service honoring Jim's life and military service will be held at Sarasota National Cemetery, located at 9810 State Rd 72, Sarasota, Florida 34241, on May 16, 2025, from 10:30 AM to 11:00 AM.
