Al was born and raised in Staten Island, New York, graduated High School in 1982, and left for Navy Boot Camp in San Diego, CA. in March 1983. After Boot Camp, he attended Mess Management Specialist (MS) “A” school, also in San Diego, CA., the reported to his first ship, the USS Comte De Grasse DD 974 in Norfolk, VA. After two years on the ship Al volunteered for Submarine Duty and attended Basic Enlisted Submarine School in New London, CT.
From there, he started my adventure in the submarine adventure, serving on the USS Henry M Jackson SSBN 730 (Gold), USS Georgia SSBN 729 (Blue), USS Kamehameha SSN 642, and USS Pasadena SSN 752. My shore duties included White House Presidential Mess, Bureau of Naval Personnel as the MS Detailer, and Navy Food Management Team, Pearl Harbor, HI. In 2005, after 22-years in the world’s greatest Navy, Al retired as a Culinary Specialist Senior Chief Petty Officer, and moved to Florida.
After being retired for almost 10-years, he started taking classes at St. Petersburg College, where he earned my Accounting Technology Operations Certificate in 2016, Associate in Science in Business Administration-Accounting in 2016, Associate in Arts in 2017, and Bachelor of Science in Business Administration-Financial Services in 2018. Al joined Tang Base in 2007, and have served as Treasurer, Base Commander, and Secretary, and now Treasurer again.
Dan was born in Salt Lake City and lived in Milford, Ut, southwestern Utah, halfway between Salt Lake and Vegas on the main line of the Union Pacific Railroad and up and down California coast. His Dad was in the Navy at the end of WWII, got out, reenlisted and retired after 26 years. Dan joined Navy Jan 1968.
Reported aboard Naval Training Center, Recruit Training Command, San Diego, across the street from his house, Seaman Recruit. He was guaranteed a school out of Boot Camp, volunteered for submarines and was sent to Basic Submarine School. Reported aboard Basic Enlisted Submarine School, Submarine Base, Groton, Connecticut, Fireman Apprentice, 7 Sep 1968.
Spent the next 21 years serving on 5 Fast Attack submarines. USS Tang SS563, out of Pearl Harbor was Dan’s first and Qual boat, reporting aboard on 12 Dec 68, Qualified in Submarines on 31 Oct 69. The Tang was awarded 3 Battle Es while he was onboard and made 2 deployments to West Pacs, with time off the coast of Vietnam. Promoted to Seaman, SN(SS) and ET3(SS) off of the Fleet Test.
While on Bremerton Dan received his AS, Electronic Technology, from Gavilan College and started working on his BS through the Navy Campus Degree Program, receiving his BS, Computer Science, System Software, from the University of New Haven. He continued his education working on a Master, Data Base Management, from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He had to quit Dec 2002, 2 classes and a paper short due to health and moving to Florida.
